Nutritional Benefits Of Goji Berries
Goji berries are known by a variety of other names- wolfberries, Chinese wolfberries, mede berries, bocksdorn, etc. The berries are the fruits of either of two closely related plants: Lycium barbarum and Lycium chinense. They are reddish-orange in colour and ripen in the period between July and October in the Northern Hemisphere. The plant is native to Asia and southeastern Europe. Goji berries are specially known for their nutrient value and high content of antioxidants. Goji berries are used most often in their dried form- as food, as part of beverages like wine, tea and coffee, and in soups.
Products Made From Goji Berries
Goji berry, also known as wolfberry in Western countries, is one of the most obscure, yet very useful and beneficial fruits known to mankind. The plant is considered near the characteristics of the species that include tomato, chili pepper, eggplant and potato. Goji berry was originally native to the small communities in southwest Asia, southeastern Europe and China. Nowadays, the plant is being cultivated in many parts of the world. And there are good reasons why.
Sun-dried Goji Berry
Goji berry is undoubtedly one of the most important and useful plants ever cultivated in China. Ancient Chinese medicine practitioners had acknowledged the plant’s medicinal and treatment potential by using it in many Chinese herbal medicine products. To date, many Chinese medicinal goods are still containing the basic ingredients from Goji berry. The plant, also known as Wolfberry specifically in Western nations, is also widely cultivated across the globe because of its known health benefits.
What is so Special About Goji Berries?
Goji Berries might be better known as the wolfberry, whose plant is distinctly related to tobacco, chili pepper, deadly nightshade, eggplant, tomato, and the potato plants. The US Department of Agriculture Germplasm Resources Information Network also classifies Goji Berries as the plants known as matrimony vine, Duke of Argyll?s tea tree, cambronera, bocksdorn, Barbary matrimony vine, and the Chinese wolfberry.
The Many Wonders of Goji Berries
More and more people these days are becoming conscious about their health and body. With a little inspiration from their Hollywood idols, many men and women in the US and around the globe are leaving no stones unturned just to find foods, products or supplements that will help maintain a healthy body, a beautiful and clear skin, and, if possible, an active sex life.
Why is Goji Berry So Beneficial?
Goji berries or Tibetan Goji berries are technically known as Lycium Barabarum (Latin). They belong to the family of Solanaceae (flowering plants) which also have members like potatoes, tomatoes and tobacco. It is quite surprising to know that over eighty varieties of Lycium berry are found in nature. One of the most famous include the Chinese Wolfberry which is considered by Chinese healers as the best cure for male sexual dysfunction. But to be on a more technical ground, Chinese Wolfberry is just a genetic cousin of Lycium Barbarum and is not exactly a true Goji berry.
