I bought this book to help me plan landscaping destroyed in a fire. It is fantastic and I wish I had had it the past 30 years. It has color pictures of all the plants, information on what plants should go in your geographic area, and suggestions for plants that work well together. For each plant there is info on the water usage so you can group plants that take the same water together. Much more useful than the Sunset book because of all the color photos and because it is only California so has more info on most plants. Highly, highly recommended.

There have been several good books on California landscape planting published in the past few years but this is best of all. Its very comprehensive for plant selection in California’s mediterranean and desert climates. Its very difficult to do this considering the rich palate of planting adaptable to mediterranian climates. It includes plants from temperate, mediterranean, sub tropical, and desert floristic zones that are adaptable to the subject region. It does not include turf grass or the annuals which isn’t really necessary for a book like this. The quality of the photography and color printing for photos of plants is excellent. The majority of species is given more then one photo showing overall form, foliage, flowers, fruit, and bark as required to show the character of the plants. The book has sections on plant selection for various design elements, and planting palates for suitability in the various California plant climate zones (Sunset zones) that consider design theme, seasonal temperature, and irrigation requirements along with its plant encyclopedia. It’s also a great book for identifying plants that are seen in California landscape as so many books lack the comprehensive quality photography. Two other good books on tree selection for California’s mediterranean climate are Trees of the California Landscapeand Ornamental Trees for Mediterranean Climates, the Trees of San Diego

I’ve been waiting for this book for about 6 months, checking the publisher’s site every few weeks. It’s gorgeous, I can’t wait to buy my first house, get rid of the front lawn and put this book to good use!

I browsed through this book in the Theodore Payne Foundation library. The book is absolutely beautiful and appears quite comprehensive. Every page I saw was printed color and beautifully illustrated on quality paper stock.
