I was told male urine was a good catalyst for speeding up the rate of breakdown in compost. My partner got into a routine of walking for his night time cigarette down to the compost heep and urinating in the compost. I was amazed as the compost became soil in a quarter of the time. I was told only male urine should be used. Is that correct?

Only because of the convenience,if you’ll excuse the pun. It’s easier for the male of the species.Ladies have a more uncomfortable time on a compost heap, and collecting it in bottles isn’t convenient. Urine produces ammonia and other useful fertilisers and feeds fungi and bacteria which do most of the composting, asisted hopefully by hundreds of earthworms, who do a great job of recycling and modifying the texture of composted materials. . Any urine works just as well as any other, but horse urine and dung is well respected by the farming community…or at least that part of it who can still be bothered, instead of buying sacks of fertiliser..
It is the nitrogen in urine that is helpful to your compost. I think there is little difference in male/female urine concentration.
Urine is urine, so doesn’t matter, but it’s easier for guys to pee in the compost.
true – don’t know the reason behind it though!
